Hebrews 6:10-12

“God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.”

August 10th is ‘National Lazy Day’, which takes place on the 10th of August each year and has become an unofficial holiday for some. For those who celebrate it, they say that Lazy Day, “… is a day to embrace laziness without guilt, encouraging everyone to slow down, relax, and recharge… simply doing nothing at all.” (According to Awareness Days UK, https://awareness-days.co.uk/awareness-day/national-lazy-day/2025-08-10/ )

Whilst we all need rest and relaxation in our lives, to become lazy is to become selfish and self-centred which dishonours God. The writer to the Hebrews suggests that we need, “diligence to the very end”, so in other words to keep on doing, “… your work and the love you have shown him (God) as you have helped his people”. The Lord Jesus told a parable of a rich fool (Luke 12), who said, “Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry”, as a warning to, “Be on your guard against all kinds of greed”. Therefore, we are not to be lazy, but to “… imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised” – heaven!
